After more than 24 years of dedicated service to Conway Corp and the Conway community, Plant Operator David Hillis is retiring this month.
David began his career at Conway Corp in June 2000 as an operator apprentice in the water department. He was promoted to plant operator in June 2003.
Over the years, he played a vital role in the daily operations at the Roger Q Mills Water Treatment Plant, ensuring that residents received the highest quality water possible. Throughout his tenure, David worked odd shifts, which operators do to ensure that the plant is staffed 24/7. He described it as “a sacrifice that he was happy to do.”
Reflecting on his career, David acknowledged the challenges he faced but took great pride in his responsibilities.
“A lot of the time, I knew I was solely responsible for the water our residents received,” David said. “I had to make sure that the water was good, and I took a lot of pride in that. All the guys that work odd shifts like me take a lot of pride in that.”
His commitment to excellence did not go unnoticed. Conway Corp Water Treatment Superintendent Daniel Lawrence praised his hard work and dedication.
“David has served Conway Corp faithfully for almost 25 years,” Lawrence said. “He has made the drinking water of our city a priority through his commitment and care. His devotion and experience will be missed, but most of all, we will miss him as a friend and coworker. We sincerely hope he enjoys his well-earned retirement.”
Senior Plant Operator Shane Gray echoed these sentiments, describing him as a dependable and supportive colleague.
“David was a pleasure to work with, always reliable and willing to help a coworker,” Gray said. “We started as coworkers and became very good friends. He will be missed by the water plant team.”
Conway Corp Chief Plant Operator Reece Martin also shared his appreciation for Hillis’s expertise and mentorship.
“David was a great coworker and an even better friend,” Martin said. “He was always willing to share his knowledge of the water plant with others and help them learn. His dedication and expertise will be greatly missed.”
For David, the feeling of belonging between his coworkers was one of the reasons he stayed at Conway Corp for so long.
“I’ll miss the guys I worked with. I worked with some really good people over the years and have made friendships that will last a lifetime,” David said. “I’ll also miss the work. I love my job. Working with such a great group of guys makes it hard to leave.”
He also had high praise for the leadership team.
“Daniel and Reece are great guys! They’re young, but they’re doing a fine job. I enjoyed every minute working for them. They made things good for everyone,” David said.
As he embarks on this new chapter, he looks forward to spending more time with Laura, his wife of more than 37 years. He has big plans for retirement, including riding his motorcycle, traveling, visiting family and getting back into gardening.
“As much as I loved my job, it’s time for me to take a break and do some of the things I enjoy,” David said. “When I was young, we always had a big garden. I want to get back into a little raised-bed gardening. It’s going to take some getting used to, but I’m looking forward to it.”
Before saying goodbye, David left some words of wisdom for those still working at Conway Corp.
“Just stick with it and do what you have to do. It’s an awesome place to work, filled with outstanding individuals all working together to provide the highest level of services to the community. That’s something you can take pride in.”
Congratulations, David!
