Help us congratulate Telecom Maintenance Senior Foreman Brent Garren who won first place overall this month at the Cable Games and Golf Tournament Vendor Day, sponsored by the Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers!
His win secured an invitation to compete against technicians around the nation at the national expo being held later this year in Atlanta.
The SCTE Razorback Chapter, comprised of cable and broadband partners from around Arkansas, competed in different games which displayed their broad skill sets. Categories included:
- Fiber Optic Splicing – Tests the speed and accuracy of splicing fiber optics.
- OTDR Testing (Optical Time Domain Reflectometer Reading) – Tests and finds faults on the fiber system.
- MTDR Testing (Metallic Time Domain Reflectometer Reading) – Tests and finds faults on coaxial cable system.
- Meter Reading – Troubleshoots and quantifies signals on coaxial systems.
- Jeopardy – Tests industry knowledge and proficiencies.
- Drop Connection – Tests the technicians’ skills in prepping, installing and weatherproofing drop connectors.
- Cable Splicing – Tests technicians’ ability to core, connectorize and splice hardline coaxial cable.
Brent won two first place medals in both Jeopardy and Fiber Splicing as well as one second place medal in Cable Splicing.
“Brent is an outstanding technician and leader,” Telecommunication Systems Manager Tommy Nolen said. “His performance in the SCTE Cable Games is evidence of his commitment to excellence and overall ‘get it done’ mentality.
In addition to Brent’s overall win, three additional employees represented Conway Corp.
Telecom Trouble Technician 3 Jake Stewart placed second overall, second in Drop Connection and MTDR and third in Cable Splicing. Telecom Installer Technician 3 Lane McNew placed first in Meter Reading, second in Fiber Splicing and third in MTDR. Telecom Installer Technician 3 Matthew Stephens placed third in Meter Reading.
“I am proud of the overall commitment and participation of our Conway Corp team,” Nolen said. “Competing took countless hours of preparation and each of them competed at the top of their game.”
SCTE is a non-profit professional association for the advancement of technology, standards and workforce education related to cable telecommunications engineering. They are committed to higher training, education and accelerated networking opportunities across the industry.
